Thursday Night Race Sailing Instructions

Thursday Night Races kick off on Thursday, May 25th!  Sailing Instructions can be downloaded here, or picked up at the club.  Come on down!

We're still looking for a few volunteers to take Race Committee duty for a Thursday Night Race this summer.  Contact Sherry Fowler if you are interested in helping out.

Ready To Race -- May 29, 2006

The Education Committee, the Race Committee, the J/24 Fleet and the Etchells Fleet present a "Ready to Race" day at PYC on Monday, May 29th.  There will be a race management seminar in the morning, to teach PYC members how to operate the Lindsay Lord and get the skills and confidence to perform race committee duties for a Thursday Night Race or a one-design evening race. 

We'll have an informal barbecue and mixer for lunch, and then will go sailing.  Volunteers can practice the race management skills they learned in the morning for several practice starts and simple windward-leeward courses, or can meet and mingle with skippers in the PHRF and one-design fleets looking for crew.

PHRF & One Design Championships, July 8-9, 2006

Please join us for the PHRF and One-Design Championship Regatta, July 8 and 9, 2006.  As usual, we will have tight racing on two courses around inflatable drop marks.  July tends to bring sunny days and good breeze to PYC.

2006 Season

Save the dates:

April 29 -- PYC Spring Cleanup -- come help rake leaves, trim bushes, and clean up the club for summer.

May 29 -- "Ready to Race" introduction to racing, open house, practice races, meet skippers and other crew. 

June 10 -- Centerboard Yacht Club regatta -- support our neighbors in Portland Harbor for the first regatta of the year. 

June 17 & 18 -- Pilot Race at PYC.  This is a two-day, multiple class regatta here at PYC.  We're looking for volunteers on race committee -- help raise flags, move marks, shoot guns, and keep score.

July 4 -- Family Picnic/ Scavenger Hunt at PYC

July 8-9  PHRF and One Design Championships.  This is our biggest regatta besides the Monhegan Race, with multiple classes and two starting lines.  Come down and volunteer for one or both days.  The weather is good, the wind is good, and there is lots of exciting racing to watch.

July 29  Handy Boat Regatta.  The marina next door to the club hosts a friendly round-the-buoys day of family racing.

Augutst 12-13  Monhegan Race.  Our biggest regatta of the year, this is our flagship race. 

August 19-20 MS Harborfest.  Sail for a good cause. 

September 9-10  J/24 Fleet 43 Downeast Regatta.  This is an exciting weekend of tight one-design racing hosted at the club, with competitors from all over New England.

September 16 -- Fall Harvest Regatta.  September's the best time to sail in Maine: crisp warm days and good breeze. 

September 23 -- Lightship Race -- It's a tradition: sail out to the Lightship Navigational Buoy, around it and back to the club.  Hope for good weather!

Update: Fall Harvest

We're all watching Ophelia with interest.  Fall Harvest PRO Stephanie Helms has said she won't send people out if the blow is hard; stay tuned or come to the skippers' meeting for more details.

Some corrections to the NORs: parking privileges at Handy Boat now require a small fee, and Handy's no longer offers launch service to the PYC dock.  In addition, because the yacht club is open for dinner (the last night for PYC members to enjoy chef Shawn Lewis's work), we will NOT be serving chowder or chili after the regatta.  We apologize for the incorrect information.  PYC members who wish to eat in the dining room are encouraged to make reservations.

Downeast Invitational

Last weekend the PYC and J/24 Casco Bay Fleet 43 hosted the 19th annual Downeast Invitational Regatta.  25 boats participated in the 5 race series.  Their crews were treated to two lovely late summer Maine days of sailing on Casco Bay, not to mention the traditional downeast lobster feed on Saturday night.  PYC member Mark Klein and crew sailed to a one point victory over Camden's Jeff Dinse and visitor Paul Adam.  Full results are here:

Lightship Race (October 1, 2005)

The Lightship Race will be held on October 1 (or, if weather is terrible, on October 2), 2005.  This is a race from the starting area just outside of Clapboard Island, out to the Lightship Navigational Buoy and back to the finish.  (The Race Committee may shorten the course to finish just outside of Hussey Sound, at its discretion).  It is the final race of the season at PYC.  Racers can enjoy chili or chowder at the club after racing.

Fall Harvest Regatta

Join us at PYC for a day of crisp September racing.  Saturday, September 17 we will host the Fall Harvest Regatta.  Skippers' meeting will be at 9:30 at PYC; first gun at 11:15.  We will have chili or chowder and beer for sailors following the event.   We will not have a formal awards ceremony, but winning skippers will get prizes in the mail. Entry fee is $30.00.  (Yachts pre-registering for both the Fall Harvest Regatta and the Lightship Race can do so for the discounted combined price of $50.00)
